Ms. Karol Estrada, my assistant artist eyes, coordinated an art exhibit presentation to students in 2D Art Advanced Placement Class at Southwest Senior High School. Based on the countless questions asked by so many students, they appeared to be awestruck that I was blind yet still able to create beautiful pieces. I could feel the excitement within the room and heard comments such as “Wow”. “Look at that piece”. “I like that one” “Look at the movement, colors”. Ms. Michelle Mcoy, Art Teacher, expressed a keen interest in the materials used to create “Venus” and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I used recycled material and reclaimed wood in every sculpture. There was one student in particular who stood out during the presentation. According to Karol, this student usually remains quiet in class but on this occasion, she appeared to be curious, intrigued and motivated by what she saw during the art exhibit. She spoke up and asked the most questions which were so touching to my heart. Her fellow classmates were amazed when they saw her pull up a chair quietly, sat beside me and proceeded to ask questions about every sculpture.

At one point, I suggested a vote to see which piece was each student’s favorite. According to Karol, hands were going up from left to right and she did a hand count and for each piece. I was pleasantly surprised by the final results. It was 1st ‘The Scientist’, 2nd ‘Meditation Man’ and 3rd ‘Brukkins’.

It was a rewarding experience to share with these promising young artists. I wish them all the best in their future endeavors as artists.
